Mexico nets 5 human traffickers, 50 illegal immigrants

MEXICO CITY, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- A total of five human traffickers and 50 illegal immigrants were arrested in Mexico in recent days, authorities said on Tuesday.

Among the traffickers were three Mexicans and a Guatemalan who tried to sumggle 42 Guatemalan immigrants into the United States via the state of Chihuahua, the Public Security Ministry said in a statement.

The group was caught on Tuesday on a bus on a road between Sonora and Chihuaha states. The immigrants said they had each paid thousands of U.S. dollars to the four traffickers in order to get into the United States.

On Monday, police arrested nine Mexicans in Sonora who appeared to have been lost since Saturday in a desert while trying to cross into the United States. One of them was charged with human trafficking.
