Participation in Shanghai Expo boosts Brazil's image

12-15-2010 14:05 BJT Special Report:Shanghai World Expo 2010 |

BRASILIA, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Shanghai Expo boosted Brazil's image in China and would certainly bear fruit for trade between the two countries, a Brazilian trade official said Monday.

"The Shanghai Expo is not meant for participants to do business, but to do presentations, therefore we know that Brazil managed to present an impressive image in China and I am sure it will produce increasing results concerning trade," Alessandro Teixeira, president of the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, told a press conference.

He said 2.6 million people visited Brazil's pavilion at the Shanghai Expo, to which the Brazilian government sent 300 representatives from 20 states.

However, Teixeira said that, besides participation in international fairs, Brazil was diversifying its presence abroad.

In 2010, 140 Brazilian enterprises, 302 foreign companies and 22 sectoral entities joined the promotional events at Formula Indy races, which resulted in business amounting to 589 million U.S. dollars.

Teixeira said Brazilian exports had returned to the level of 2008, after a drop last year due to the global financial crisis.

From January to October, exports from Brazil totaled 31.24 billion dollars, compared to 31.73 billion dollars in 2008.

He said the South American country could reach 198 billion dollars in exports next year, but it still had to face challenges concerning exchange rates and competitiveness in the manufacturing sector.
