DEPOK, Indonesia, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan on Wednesday said that the country has surpassed the target of planting 1 billion trees in 2010 stated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono earlier this year.

"As of today, we have planted 1.135 billion trees. Target of 1 billion trees will be heavily surpassed as we have not yet calculated 400 million seed provided by our people," said Hasan in his remarks on inauguration of permanent seedbed for reforestation here.

He said that the program as part of reforestation efforts was conducted in coastal areas, city forest, plantations, reclamation areas and others.

"With this planting, we provide a real contribution to environment, not only in reducing gas emission but also in preventing natural disasters of flood and landslide," said Hasan.

He also said that the program will also improve economic life of people surrounding forests

President Yudhoyono has stated that Indonesia will reduce gas emission of 24 percent by 2020.

Indonesian Vice President Boediono on Wednesday inaugurated a permanent seedbed for reforestation and planted a tree in the commemoration of the National Planting Month in Depok City of West Java province.

The permanent seedbed was built by the Forestry Ministry in cooperation with non-governmental organization of Mitra Kehutanan as a support for environment reforestation.

The inauguration was a start of construction of permanent seedbeds throughout Indonesia.

This year, the Forestry Ministry will build 23 permanent seedbeds of 45.8 hectares in 22 provinces with high quality seed production of about 35 million per year.
