France's electricity consumption hits record high

12-15-2010 14:18 BJT

PARIS, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- France's electricity consumption hit a record of 94,200 megawatts Tuesday evening due to a cold wave, Reseau de Transport d' Electricte, the transmission system operator, said.

The national electricity consumption reached 93,752 megawatts at 6:45 p.m. local time (1745 GMT), and peaked at 94,200 megawatts at about 7:00 p.m. (1800 GMT), both breaking the 93,100 megawatts record in February.

This consumption peak was largely a result of the cold wave sweeping most parts of the country. Statistics show that in France, every degree Celsius fall in temperature leads to an increase of 2,300 megawatts in electricity consumption in winter.

French Industry and Energy Minister Eric Besson called on both the electricity company Electricte de France and the consumers to take up their responsibilities.

He hoped full production and import of electricity as well as everyday energy-saving measures could help meet the challenge.

The electricity company also called for a more effective use of heating, electrical appliances and energy-efficient bulbs.
