Cuban leader meets Nauru president on bilateral ties

HAVANA, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- President of the Republic of Nauru, Marcus Stephen, described his talks with Cuban leader Raul Castro as successful, Cuba's official daily Granma said Tuesday.

Marcus said his meeting with Castro greatly strengthened relations between Nauru and Cuba.

"We talked about international politics, bilateral relations and cooperation," he said.

During his stay, Stephen and his delegation paid tribute to Cuba's national hero Jose Marti. They also visited the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), which has nine students from Nauru.

Nauru is an island nation in Micronesia in the South Pacific.

Cuba and Nauru have signed cooperation agreements on health and education since diplomatic relations were established on May 7, 2002.

Cuba also has a medical team in Nauru.
