ISLAMABAD, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met on Saturday with Nawaz Sharif, chief of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), to promote the friendship between the two countries.

Calling Sharif an old friend of China, Wen said the Chinese government and people would never forget his contribution to the development of bilateral ties.

Wen also expressed appreciation for the PML-N's commitment to developing the China-Pakistan friendship.

Over the past 60 years, the two countries have always been honest to, understood and supported each another, the premier said. The China-Pakistan friendship is the common wealth for both countries and peoples, which should be treasured, he added.

"China is ready to enhance exchanges with various parties of Pakistan including the PML-N, beef up mutual understanding and jointly push forward the bilateral friendly cause," Wen said.

Describing China as a friendly neighbor of Pakistan, Sharif said the Pakistani people were grateful to China's support and help to the country over the years.

To further consolidate and enhance bilateral friendly cooperation is a consensus among various Pakistani parties, he said, adding the PML-N would continue to make efforts to this end.

Wen arrived here Friday for a three-day visit at the invitation of his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani.
