China's urbanization making steady improvement

12-21-2010 10:20 BJT

The fourth China Urbanization International Summit was held at Beijing on Dec. 19.

China International Urbanization Development Strategy Research Committee (CIUDSRC) released a report on China's urbanization rate in 2008.

It was reported that China's urbanization rate maintained a momentum of steady development and reached 33.28 percent in 2008. Compared with 2008, China's urbanization rate has improved 0.35 percentage points.

Analysis of the increase in China's urbanization rate in 2008 attributed it to the following reasons:

First, the industrial layout and structural adjustment became more rational in China. The secondary industry and tertiary industries have developed rapidly in China, liberating a large portion of the population in the primary industry from agricultural production and rural life. And there has gradually been industrial transfer in the secondary industry and the tertiary industry, which led to the development of urbanization in China.

Secondly, investment in real estate has sustained rapid growth, which greatly stimulated the development of Chinese urbanization.

Finally, the construction of the small towns and the coordination of urban and rural social development have expanded throughout the whole country. By the end of 2008, there were 19,234 towns in China, an increase of 17,061 towns compared with the construction of small towns in 1978.
