Senior Chinese leader urges officials to enhance supervision in fighting corruption

12-21-2010 21:08 BJT

BEIJING, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's anti-corruption chief, He Guoqiang, asked leading officials Tuesday to enhance their supervisory work to ensure clean governance in their respective jurisdictions.

"Leading officials at various levels are crucial in the country's efforts to build up clean government and fight corruption," He, secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said at a high-level seminar.

He asked officials to incorporate corruption-fighting work into their overall work plan while coordinating the fight with economic and social development.

Officials who do not ensure clean governance will be "dealt with strictly," he said.

In the CPC's latest move to fight corruption, China released an amended anti-corruption regulation in November.

Based on a regulation that took effect in 1998, the amended regulation details supervisory instructions and responsibilities.

It underlines CPC officials' responsibility to promote transparency when exercising power and stresses mutual-supervision between officials who exercise decision-making power and those that enforce and supervise decision-making.

He, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, ordered officials to study and implement the amended regulation earnestly.

He also emphasized public supervision, requesting relevant authorities expand channels that allow the public to supervise officials.
