Pyongyang citizens rally to pledge commitment to key tasks in new year

PYONGYANG, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Over 100,000 people rallied in the capital city of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Monday, expressing determination to implement their nation's key tasks in the new year, state news agency KCNA reported.

Municipal leader Mun Kyong Dok, a senior member of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, was quoted as telling the crowd that Pyongyang will accelerate the development of the light industry in 2011 as stated in the joint New Year editorial published in the county's leading newspapers.

The city will follow the spirit of the editorial to bring about a decisive turn in the improvement of the people's living standard and the building of a thriving nation, he added.

He also underscored the need to speed up the construction of 100,000 flats in Pyongyang and other major projects, and turn the capital city into a more beautiful and modern place, according to the KCNA.

Representatives from different walks of life also delivered speeches at the rally, expressing their determination to develop the light industry and boost production.
