BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Peter Postlethwaite, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 1994, died of cancer in Shrewsbury, England, on Sunday, according to New York Times on Tuesday.

Postlethwaite was born on Feb. 7, 1946, into a working-class family near Liverpool, where as a teenager he once booked the Beatles to appear at a village hall.

Postlethwaite was nominated for an Oscar trophy in 1994 for his role as the father of a man accused of terrorism in "In the Name of the Father". He played another father role in last year's "Clash of the Titans". Last year, he acted as the dying corporate baron in the blockbuster "Inception".

The Daily Telegraph noted, "The journey he took was beautifully shaded, by turns semi-serious, pensive and pained before arriving, touchingly, at some dazed, carefree state where madness has become his sole means of self-preservation."
