China says its collaboration with U.S. drives regional prosperity

01-15-2011 08:49 BJT Special Report:Chinese President Hu Jintao Visits US |

BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- China-U.S. cooperation promotes prosperity throughout Asia and the Pacific with countries in the region that are eager to share the benefits of their collaboration, a senior Chinese diplomat said on Friday.

"China-U.S. interaction has worked for the continued stability and prosperity in Asia and Pacific...All countries in the region would like to share the dividends of China-U.S. cooperation," Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai told the Lanting Forum on Friday.

On the overall Asia-Pacific situation, Cui said the entire region remains stable and has developed rapidly over the past three decades since China's introduction of reform, its opening-up initiative, and the normalization of China-U.S. diplomatic ties.

Thanks to the joint efforts of China, the United States and all Asia-Pacific countries, some long-standing hot-button issues were properly addressed or eased, providing a favorable environment for all countries to focus on economic development and closer cooperation, Cui said.

"As the two largest economies, the United States and China are playing an increasingly bigger role in driving regional economic growth," Cui said, citing China's status as being Asia's top importer for a number of years and being the number one trade partner for many Asian countries, while the annual trade volume between the United States and Asia-Pacific countries hit 1 trillion U.S dollars.

Cui underscored China-U.S. collaboration on combating terrorism, weapons proliferation and cross-border crime, as well as disaster prevention and reduction, saying those joint efforts exercised positive impacts on ensuring regional peace, stability and prosperity.

Cui said China-U.S. coordination promotes the integration of the Asia-Pacific region, highlighting the two countries' participation into regional mechanisms and positive roles in boosting the overall Asia-Pacific strategic status.

"The Asia-Pacific region remains at a crucial time in its steady rise," Cui said, stressing countries in the region would like to work with both China and the United States and expect the two countries to step up cooperation.

Initiated by the Chinese Foreign Ministry in December last year, the Lanting Forum is a monthly platform for Chinese officials, scholars and social groups to discuss international issues and China's foreign policy.
