Taiwan issue most sensitive in China-U.S. ties: diplomat

01-15-2011 08:50 BJT Special Report:Chinese President Hu Jintao Visits US |

BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese diplomat said Friday that the Taiwan issue was "the most sensitive and important" point in relations between China and the United States.

"The Taiwan issue concerns China's core interests of sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the political foundation of the China-U.S. relationship," said Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai at a forum on China-U.S. relations.

Cui's remarks came just days ahead of the upcoming U.S. trip by Chinese President Hu Jintao from Jan. 18 to 21, which Cui said would "open a new chapter for China-U.S. reciprocal cooperation."

"If the Taiwan issue is handled well, China-U.S. relations will develop smoothly. Otherwise the relations will suffer disturbances and setbacks," said Cui, adding that this has been repeatedly proven over the past three decades.

Noting that China-U.S. relationship, with twists and turns, has never proceeded without bumps in the road , Cui said structural problems or differences between the two countries should be properly addressed to ensure the healthy and stable development of bilateral ties.

But Cui said cooperation remained the mainstream for China-U.S. ties.

"China and the United States have no other alternative but cooperation, which will bring about win-win results for the two countries and the world." said Cui.
