Apple CEO Jobs taking another medical leave

01-18-2011 13:32 BJT

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs announced he was taking another medical leave of absence, reviving concerns about the health of the iconic technology executive, media reports said Tuesday.

"At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health," Jobs, 55, said in an email to Apple employees that did not specify his latest medical concerns.

"I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can," Jobs wrote. "In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy."

Jobs, the Silicon Valley legend behind the Macintosh computer, iPod, iPhone and iPad, said Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook would take responsibility for day-to-day operations once again, but he would remain as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions.

In the last decade, Jobs has survived a rare but curable form of pancreatic cancer and underwent a liver transplant in 2009, when he took a six-month medical break.

Unlike Jobs' 2009 leave of absence, when he vowed to return to work in just less than six months, Jobs did not say in the note made public Monday how long he would be on leave this time.

Apple did not specify either why or for how long Jobs would be absent, driving up the worst fears about Jobs' medical condition.

Wall Street was closed for a holiday but the surprise announcement sent Apple shares tumbling in Frankfurt, where they plunged 6.57 percent to 243.10 euros.
