Top Chinese legislator meets parliamentary leaders of Cyprus, New Zealand

BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, met with parliamentary leaders from Cyprus and New Zealand Friday, in an effort to deepen parliamentary ties.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislative body, proposed expanding parliament-to-parliament exchange, to enhance China's relations with the two countries.

In a meeting with President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus Marios Garoyian, Wu expressed China's appreciation for Cyprus's support of China on crucial issues, including the European Union's recognition of China as a market economy.

With 2011 the 40th anniversary of China-Cyprus diplomatic relations, Wu said China hopes to promote exchange with Cyprus and expand trade cooperation.

Garoyian said Cyprus is committed to developing stronger ties with China.

Garoyian and his parliamentary delegation are on a week-long tour of China which will also take them to the municipalities of Tianjin and Shanghai and the northwest China city of Xi'an.

In a meeting with Lindsay Tisch, deputy speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives, Wu reviewed the smooth development of China-New Zealand ties since the two countries forged diplomatic relations 38 years ago.

Characterizing New Zealand as China's good friend and its partner in Asia and the Pacific, Wu said China hopes to enhance political trust and deepen cooperation with New Zealand.

Tisch said China's development is an opportunity to boost the global economic recovery.

Tisch said New Zealand hopes to work with China to implement their free-trade agreement and upgrade trade and economic cooperation.

After Beijing, Tisch will travel to Tianjin and Tangshan in north China's Hebei province.
