Iraq to evacuate citizens from Egypt amid unrest

01-31-2011 13:16 BJT

BAGHDAD, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Iraq said Sunday it will send planes to evacuate its citizens from Eygpt after six days of anti-government protests, an official in the Iraqi Ministry of Transportation said.

"Under the request of the ministry of transportation, the Iraqi Airways will carry out free of charge flights to Cairo to evacuate Iraqi citizens who are willing to return to the country," the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The Iraqi ministry is coordinating with the Iraqi embassy in Cairo to evacuate the citizens, the official said without giving further details.

Since Tuesday hundreds of thousands of angry Egyptians took to the streets in Cairo and several other cities demanding the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his government.

The protests sparked wave of rioting, looting and arson, that killed and wounded hundreds of people, prompting several countries to encourage their nationals to leave.
