DPJ power broker indicted over accounting irregularities

01-31-2011 15:00 BJT

TOKYO, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Japan's ruling Democratic Party power broker Ichiro Ozawa was indicted Monday over irregular political fund reports, local media reported.

The mandatory indictment by court-appointed lawyers came after an independent judicial panel made up of citizens determined twice that the veteran politician should be indicted as his involvement in the case is strongly suspected, Kyodo News reported.

The move follows a decision by prosecutors not to act.

Ozawa, a former president of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, will be tried in court on suspicion of violating the Political Funds Control Law over alleged false reporting by his political funds management body, Rikuzankai, of funds in connection with a land deal in Tokyo, according to Kyodo News report.
