Indian Navy to interrogate captured Somali pirates in Mumbai

01-31-2011 15:03 BJT

NEW DELHI, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Indian Navy Monday said that it would interrogate in Mumbai all the 15 Somali pirates who were captured after an exchange of fire in Arabian Sea off the coast of the Lakshadweep Islands.

"They (pirates) are being brought to Mumbai and their interrogation would take place today," Indian Navy's spokesman Commander P.V.S. Satish told the media. The pirates had been on the prowl in the Arabian Sea since last April after they hijacked a Thai vessel, Prantalay, and were using it as a mother vessel for carrying out a wave of attacks on merchant vessels.

The Indian Navy's INS Cankarso intercepted the mother ship 370 km off the Kochi coast on Friday evening, but the pirates opened fire with automatic weapons in a desperate bid to escape. All the pirates were caught.
