Indonesia asks for Swiss help in bank scam

01-31-2011 15:27 BJT

JAKARTA, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia has sought the assistance of Swiss authorities to help recover assets connected to the Bank Century bailout allegedly sheltered in Swiss banks, the Jakarta Post reported on Monday.

The media reported that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had discussed the issue with Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey over the weekend in Davos, Switzerland, where he attended the World Economic Forum.

"The first issue I raised during my meeting with the Swiss president was the need for cooperation between Indonesia and Switzerland in recovering the assets, some of which are believed to be in Swiss banks," Yudhoyono said during his transit in Dubai on Sunday en route to Jakarta from Zurich.

Switzerland has been less than cooperative in recovering assets from Bank Century (now renamed Bank Mutiara), Yudhoyono said, quoting a government report.

"The Swiss president explained that they actually wanted to cooperate but needed documents explaining the legal side of the Century case so the request can be processed," Yudhoyono said.

"I told her that our team would get back to her. We hope there will be good cooperation and we have sought support from the World Bank to recover the stolen assets."

Yudhoyono added that the government would follow up on his talks with Calmy-Rey after he arrived in Jakarta.

The controversial 6.76 trillion rupiah (716 million U.S. dollars) bailout of Bank Century between 2008 and 2009 has seen businessmen involved in the bailout sent to prison, but high- ranking government officials implicated in the disbursement of the bailout funds remain untouched.
