Japan's industrial output climbs 3.1% in Dec.

01-31-2011 15:56 BJT

TOKYO, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Japan's industrial production increased a seasonally adjusted 3.1 percent in December from a month earlier, marking the second consecutive month of growth, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said in a preliminary report on Monday.

December's rise follows a 1.0 percent increase logged in November and beat the median market forecast of a 2.9 percent increase.

The index of output at factories and mines rose 15.9 percent from a year earlier in the month of December and industrial shipments increased 1.1 percent from the previous month. Meanwhile inventories were up 1.4 percent, the ministry said.

Analysts said that increased demand for Japanese goods, particularly from other Asian countries led by China, spurred factories to increase their output, supporting other government data suggesting Japan's export-led economic recovery is getting back on track.

The government report revealed that the transport equipment, electronic devices and steel sectors posted particularly strong growth figures, and the government raised its assessment of industrial production, saying output was showing signs of "picking up."

This assessment followed the previous month's view from the government stating that industrial production has "weakened."
