Second bomb blast kills police officer in NW Pakistan

01-31-2011 16:33 BJT

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- At least one police officer was killed and several others injured as another police van was attacked by a remote-controlled bomb blast in northwest Pakistan's Peshawar on Monday, local sources told Xinhua.

It is the second attack on police in Peshawar in two hours. Earlier the day, a suicide bomber attacked a police vehicle killing one police officer and four other people in the same city, officials said.

Police said that a roadside bomb exploded near a police mobile van at Pishta Khara area of Peshawar, killing a police man at the scene and injuring several others, including a police man. The vehicle was damaged in the blast. The police blocked the main road and launched a search operation in the area.

The injured were transferred to the city's main Khyber Teaching Hospital.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack. Taliban militants always claim responsibility for attacks on police officers.

Senior provincial minister Bashir Bilour earlier blamed Taliban militants for bomb attacks and said the blasts are reaction to the security forces operation against the militants in the Mohmand tribal region.

Security forces are on a major offensive in Mohmand tribal region along the border with Afghanistan and on Sunday killed 14 militants, reports said Monday.
