Chile tightens housing construction norms

02-16-2011 15:43 BJT

SANTIAGO, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chilean President Sebastian Pinera Tuesday issued a decree to tighten the country's housing construction norms.

The decree, proposed by experts, regulates the distance between two buildings and modifies the criteria of construction.

Chile has spent more than 1 billion U.S. dollars on its reconstruction after a major earthquake and tsunami in February 2010, building more than 1,500 kilometers of highways and roads, 212 bridges and other infrastructure.

The calamity made the country realize the importance of construction quality and the buildings would be stronger during earthquakes, engineer of the housing ministry Marcelo Soto said.

The temblor, which killed 524 Chileans and left more than 30 others missing, damaged 220,000 houses and buildings in central and southern Chile and caused losses of 30 billion dollars in infrastructure.
