iPhone 4 sells well online in U.S.

BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- The iPhone 4 is selling well on the Internet, according to Verizon Wireless.

Daniel S. Mead, Chief Executive of Verizon Wireless, said that more than 60% of iPhone sales occurred online, resulting in lukewarm sales in stores.

He made this remark in an interview in response to a report that iPhone 4's sales performance failed to meet the company's expectations.

Last summer, Apple said it had sold 1.7 million iPhone 4s across the world during the first three days the device was available to customers.

Oppenheimer & Co. analyst Timothy Horan estimated that Verizon Wireless would sell three to four million iPhone 4s in the first quarter of 2011, and 10 million for the whole year.

Verizon Wireless first offered the phone to its existing customers on Feb. 3, and then began selling it in stores one week later.

The phased launch also contributes to the modest store sales.

Verizon Wireless is a wireless phone provider jointly established by Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC.
