BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- China said Tuesday it supports the mediation efforts by the African Union to resolve the Cote d'Ivoire crisis.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a written statement that China was worried about tensions in Cote d'Ivoire.

Jiang said China has always advocated resolving the crisis peacefully and called for calm and restraint in Cote d'Ivoire.

"We hope the involved parties can properly handle the differences through dialogue and negotiation to realize political reconciliation and safeguard peace and stability in Cote d'Ivoire," Jiang said.

China supports current mediation efforts by the African Union's high-level panel to end the Cote d'Ivoire crisis, said the statement.
