German defense minister resigns over plagiarism allegation

03-01-2011 19:27 BJT

BERLIN, March 1 (Xinhua) -- German Defense Minister Karl Theodor zu Guttenberg resigned Tuesday morning, after he has been under mounting political pressure following allegation on plagiarizing large parts of his thesis.

He has informed his resignation with Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was in Hanover for the world's leading IT expo CeBIT.

"It is not possible, however, to meet the expectations placed in me," he said in a statement in the Defense Ministry in Berlin.

He said he would told his opponents that he was actually not "a minister of self-defense," as they criticized him earlier.

Guttenberg was deprived of his doctoral degree last week. In his 475-page thesis, some German law professors and plagiarism hunters have listed over 100 suspect parts that was copied or slightly altered without any acknowledgement in the footnotes.
