France confirms crash of Mirage 2000N

PARIS, March 3 (Xinhua) -- A Mirage 2000N jet fighter of the French Air Force crashed on a training mission Tuesday night with the two crewmember probably dead, the Air Force said Thursday in a statement.

The crash site was in the town of Saint-Pres-Oradoux Crocq in central French department of Creuse, the statement issued by the Air Force's office of information service and public relation ( Sirpa) said, adding that civil and military resources are deployed to the area.

Earlier reports said that a pilot and a navigator in the jet, both in their 30s, were still missing, but some fragments likely belonging to human was recovered near the site. Relevant analysis was underway by local authorities.

The Accident Investigation Bureau of the Defense Ministry is investigating the circumstances of the accident, Sirpa said, describing the two crewmen as "experienced, qualified and operational."

Mirage 2000 is a French multi-role, single-engine fourth- generation jet fighter manufactured by Dassault Aviation. Mirage 2000N is a variant of the Mirage 2000 designed for nuclear strike and started its first flight in 1986.
