4.7 magnitude quake hits Wellington region

WELLINGTON, March 4 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck Wellington region early Friday, causing no casualties or damages.

The quake, which struck at 2.19 a.m. on Friday (13:19 GMT Thursday), was centered 10 kms north-east of Upper Hutt, it had a depth of 30 km.

The New Zealand Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences said it was felt widely in the lower North Island and upper South Island.

It was the second earthquake in Wellington in three days. A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck Wellington on Tuesday night. It was centered 20 km north-west of the city.
