SANTIAGO, March 3 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Assistant International Director for Disasters Reduction (Unisdr) Helena Molin-Valdes met on Thursday with President of the Chilean Deputies Chamber Alejandra Sepulveda during her visit to inspect the works done to reduce future natural disasters.

Molin-Valdez arrived in Chile amid the commemoration events of the earthquake and tsunami of Feb. 27, 2010, when more than 500 people died and 800,000 became homeless.

"During the last week, due to the earthquake anniversary and together with other UN organization of Human Settlements, we are supporting many local and national institutions to create a resources center for the local development and solve the disasters in long term," Molin-Valdes said after the meeting.

Molin-Valdez said that after visiting the regions of Maule and O'Higgins, she saw the advantages of coordination between the local communities and the authorities to face the tragedy.

"I think that with few efforts we can reach faster a bigger cooperation among the different sectors of the society, the local governments and the central entities, which are in charge of the reconstruction," she added.

Molin-Valdez said that UN wants to boost projects of local development, reduction and prevention of disasters risk, through the world campaign "My city is getting ready."

This campaign is aimed at developing safer cities by approaching the urban risks.

Regarding this, Molin-Valdes said that the meeting with Sepulveda was due to "an invitation from the deputies to join this initiative to see how can we promote together a stronger institution at local level to solve development problems, but also to aid the country's reconstruction and prevent risks in long term."
