ORBIS to spend 1.6 mln dollars saving eyesight in western China

03-04-2011 14:07 BJT

LANZHOU, March 4 (Xinhua) -- ORBIS International will spend 1.6 million U.S. dollars in the coming four years providing eye care and treating blindness in China's underdeveloped western regions.

The nonprofit organization reached an agreement with seven hospitals in northwest China's Gansu Province Thursday on saving children's eyesight, ORBIS sources and local Chinese officials confirmed Friday.

Six county hospitals and Lanzhou-based Gansu Provincial Recuperation Center Hospital signed the agreement, said Yao Zhenhua, director of the Gansu provincial association for the disabled.

Under the agreement, ORBIS will also train 1,500 optometrists in Gansu, provide free checkups to 1.2 million people and treat 500,000 with eye diseases, said George Smith, ORBIS International's director for North Asia.

The ORBIS project will help establish an eye care service network in the province, by enabling county hospitals to carry out eye surgery, treating and preventing eye diseases among children, said Yao.

He said Gansu had 314,000 visually-impaired people, but many local hospitals lacked the facilities and optometrists to provide adequate treatment.

ORBIS, an international humanitarian organization famous for its flying eye hospital, works to provide medical communities in developing countries with the skills, knowledge and resources to prevent and cure the most common forms of preventable blindness.
