GCC troops arrive in Bahrain to maintain order

03-15-2011 07:38 BJT

MANAMA, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Forces from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) arrived in Bahrain Monday to maintain order and security, according to Al-Arabiya TV.

The GCC, a six-member regional bloc, would protect strategic facilities, such as oil, electricity and water installations along with financial and banking facilities.

This came after Bahraini police clashed on Sunday with a number of Shiite protestors in one of the most violent confrontations since troops killed seven protesters last month.

Protestors continued Monday their demand for the resignation of the entire cabinet, blocking the main roads to the Financial Harbor business complex in the capital Manama.

Also, hundreds of protesters continue to hold a sit-in at Pearl Square in Manama, the focal point of demonstrations that started on February 14.

The six-member regional bloc GCC consists of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Oman.
