Seven seriously injured in Chicago building fire

CHICAGO, March 14 (Xinhua) -- An extra-alarm fire broke out in an apartment building on Monday morning near Loyola University campus in the U.S. metropolis of Chicago, injuring at least ten people, seven of whom remained in serious-to-critical condition, according to The Chicago Tribune.

A Chicago Fire Department spokesman said that some of the residents jumped out of the window of a burning four-story apartment building as firefighters used ladder to rescue several people.

And the spokesman mentioned that it made things harder as some residents jumped and landed in a narrow courtyard closed off by locked gates before firefighters could reach them.

The fire was reported about 9:50 a.m. local time, and five ambulances arrived just after 10 a.m.. The fire was put out as of 10:30 a.m..
