RIO DE JANEIRO, March 14 (Xinhua) -- The rains which have been falling over Brazil's southern region in the past week have already caused 10 deaths and left 25,000 people homeless, local authorities said on Monday.

Seven deaths were reported in Sao Lourenco do Sul, in Rio Grande do Sul state. There were two deaths in Antonina, Parana state, and one in Palhoca, Santa Catarina state.

Several small towns in the three states suffered massive damages. State of emergency and calamity was declared in some towns. The crops of tobacco, corn and soybeans in those towns suffered considerable damage. Only in Sao Lourenco do Sul, over 1,000 farms were damaged by the flood, and some farmers lost almost all of their crops. In addition, several highways are blocked, and over 40 bridges were damaged.

Summer storms are frequent in Brazil, and occasionally cause severe damages. Two months ago, a storm caused massive floods and mudslides in seven municipalities in Rio de Janeiro state, in the country's southeastern region.

It was the worst natural disaster in the state's history, killing over 900 people. Some 280 are still missing. The disaster caused massive damages and was a severe blow to the economy of several affected municipalities, mainly tourist towns.
