Air travel between Japan, China recovers

04-02-2011 14:57 BJT

Air travel between Japanese cities and Shanghai has gradually bounced back in the past five days, and the number of passengers and the proportion of Chinese to foreign passengers at the Hongqiao Airport have returned to the levels before the recent earthquake in Japan, according to information from the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.

Statistics showed that the number of passengers the Hongqiao Airport handled grew by 22 percent in the past five days compared to the previous five days. Among them, the number of Chinese citizens reached 859, an increase of 88 percent from 458 of the previous five days. In the meantime, the number of incoming passengers declined, with the number of Chinese citizens returning home to escape the nuclear crisis falling sharply. Overall, the number of passengers and the proportion of Chinese to foreign passengers have returned to their stable levels.

According to the Hongqiao Airport, most visitors to Japan are businessmen and students, and traveling to Japan remains unpopular.

A student surnamed Wang who studies in Japan said that many Japanese schools delayed opening after the earthquake, but as the situation has stabilized, most schools have opened. Although his family is a little worried, he decided to go to the Japanese school he attends after comprehensive consideration.

"I would like to see the actual situation in Japan. If the situation deteriorates, I will immediately fly back home," he said.
