Nigerian police mobilize 10,500 officers for polls in oil rich state

UYO, Nigeria, April 2 (Xinhua) -- The police in Nigeria's oil-rich Akwa Ibom has mobilized 10,500 security personnel for Saturday's National Assembly (NASS) election in the state.

State commissioner of police Felix Uyanna disclosed this to reporters in Uyo, the state capital on Friday, while briefing on the security arrangement for the election.

He said the police, as the leading agency in the civil exercise of election, would contribute 8,500 personnel while other agencies would contribute the remaining 2,000.

"This does not include the deployment of the Armed Forces made up of the Navy and the State Security Service," the police chief told reporters.

The state has been designated a flash point with its attendant security implications, Uyanna said.

He added that all the squadron and area commanders in the state police command had been deployed to other states to ensure neutrality in operations of the security personnel.

Uyanna said the Police Service Commission had already sent a team of 20 personnel to the state to monitor the conduct of the security operatives in line with the elections code of conduct.

He said 41 persons arrested in the wake of March 22, mayhem in Uyo and Ikot Ekpene, following political clash between supporters of political parties were arraigned on Friday at the Federal High Court, Uyo.

The police chief had confirmed the death of four persons during a clash between supporters of two political parties in the state.
