MANDALAY, Myanmar, April 2 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin arrived here on Saturday for a four-day visit to the neighboring country.

Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), is scheduled to meet newly elected leaders of Myanmar to enhance traditional friendship and boost cooperation in various fields between the two countries.

China and Myanmar has maintained a sound relationship.

The visit, which came days after new President U Thein Sein was sworn in, is widely viewed as a step to further the already friendly ties between the two neighbors.

Besides meetings with Myanmar leaders, Jia is also expected to announce new aid measures to the quake-striken northeast and the two countries will sign a package of cooperation pacts.

Li Junhua, China's Ambassador to Myanmar, told Xinhua earlier that the visit is of significant importance to the China-Myanmar neighborly and friendly relations and economic and trade cooperation, and will serve as a new opportunity for both sides to further the already friendly bilateral ties.

Trade between China and Myanmar has been on sharp rise in recent years. In 2010, bilateral trade totaled 4.444 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 53.2 percent over the year before. China now is Myanmar's second largest trading partner.

Myanmar is the first stop of Jia's three-nation tour, which will also take him to Australia and Samoa.
