BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- China expressed its deep condolences over the death of former Brazilian Vice President Jose Alencar Gomez da Silva on Saturday, saying that he "had made important contributions" to bilateral ties.

"Mr. Jose Alencar Gomez da Silva had been devoted to the China-Brazil friendship and made great contribution to the development of bilateral relations," foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a statement.

The Chinese government deplored the death of Alencar and expressed sincere condolences to his family, Hong said.

Alencar, 79, died on Tuesday afternoon of multiple organ failure caused by an intestinal cancer he battled for 13 years.

Alencar served two terms under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who left office in January 2011.
