MOSCOW, April 7 (Xinhua) -- A Soyuz capsule carrying three spacemen successfully docked with the International Space Station (ISS) early Thursday, media reports said.

Russian cosmonauts Alexander Samokutyaev and Andrei Borisenko and U.S. astronaut Ronald Garn aboard the the Soyuz TMA-21 "Gagarin" entered the ISS smoothly after the docking, the Itar-Tass news agency quoted the mission control center as saying.

The capsule atop a Soyuz-FG carrier rocket blasted off at 02:18 a.m. Moscow time Tuesday (2218 GMT Monday) from Kazakhstan's Baikonur space center, bringing the three new crew members to join three other astronauts in the ISS who are scheduled to return to the Earth one month later.

The new men will spend 170 days in the space station for various missions, including receiving two U.S. space shuttles and three Russian Progress cargo ships, conducting a spacewalk and carrying out over 40 experiments.

The launch of the Soyuz capsule, named after the world's first spaceman Yuri Gagarin, was designed to mark the 50th anniversary of first human space travel pioneered by Gagarin.
