300 Overseas students leave Canterbury University in Christchurch, NZ

About 300 international students have withdrawn from studying at Canterbury University in New Zealand South Island city of Christchurch since February 22 massive earthquake, Radio New Zealand reported Thursday.

In the 6.3 magnitude quake, almost 70 overseas students studying English at King's Education were killed in the collapse of the Canterbury Television building, including more than 20 Chinese students.

Canterbury University's vice chancellor, Rod Carr, said about 200 study abroad students, who complete just one semester, were transferred to other universities.

The New Zealand government is establishing a new agency to promote international education and it wanted to lure students back to New Zealand.
