Protesters march amid urgent security reinforcement in Yemen's Taiz

04-07-2011 14:37 BJT

Hundreds of thousands of protesters took to streets in Yemen's southern province of Taiz on Wednesday to repeat demand of an immediate end to President Ali Abdullah Saleh's rule amid urgent security reinforcement, witnesses said.

Witness Abdulqawi al-Ezzani told Xinhua that the largest demonstration packed the streets of Taiz city, the capital of Taiz province on Wednesday to protest against the "authorities' use of violence and force against peaceful protests during the past three days, which left at least 18 protesters dead and nearly 2,000 injured."

"There was no clash between the protesters and police forces, but we saw large security reinforcements around the presidential palace and the governor office," he said.

Around 90 percent of banks, government institutions and shops were closed during the march, responding to a general strike called by the protesters, al-Ezzani added.

Elsewhere in the southern port city of Aden, police forces used live bullets and tear gas to disperse tens of thousands of protesters demanding President Saleh's ouster, during which police arrested six protest organizers and youth activists, according to witnesses.

Yemen has witnessed weeks-long anti-government protests demanding an immediate end to the 33-year rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The political crisis recently resulted in deterioration of security stability after the government pulled the police out from some towns of major provinces.
