GCC ambassadors submit Riyadh conciliation initiative to Yemeni president

04-07-2011 15:42 BJT

Ambassadors of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman handed over to Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh the invitation of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) foreign ministers to hold conciliation talks with opposition in Riyadh, official Saba news agency reported on Wednesday.

Saba said Saleh received the three ambassadors late on Tuesday in the capital Sanaa, during which the latter delivered the invitation of the extraordinary meeting of the GCC foreign ministers for holding talks between representatives of the government and opposition in Riyadh.

It said "the aim of the Riyadh talks is to find solutions assisting Yemen to overcome its current political crisis and maintain its security, stability and unity."

President Saleh renewed Yemen's welcome to the GCC states' mediation, accenting he was keen to have serious dialogue to end the country's woes, Saba said.

On Tuesday, the opposition Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) welcomed the initiative, but stipulated that President Saleh should immediately transfer power and resign from his post as president, JMP's spokesman Mohamed Qahtan told Xinhua.

"We welcome the call of the Arab Gulf's foreign ministers to sit with Saleh in Riyadh and we will attend it, but only to discuss the process of moving the power from Saleh," he said.

"More blood is shed everyday during the current crisis ... so our country can not bear any more postponement of transferring power from Saleh," he added.

Yemen's opposition parties have offered President Saleh a fresh initiative to peacefully move the power to his deputy, and regarded the offer as the "last chance" for Saleh.

Yemen has witnessed weeks-long anti-government protests demanding an immediate end to the 33-year rule of President Saleh. The political crisis recently resulted in deterioration of security and stability after the government pulled the police out from some towns of major provinces.

Protest rallies reportedly continued on Wednesday in major provinces of Sanaa, Taiz, Al-Hodayda, Al-Bayda, Aden, Abyan, Ibb and Hadramout.
