3 Taliban militants killed in southern Afghanistan attack

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Militants attack police department in Kandahar city on Thursday but the security forces have so far killed three attackers, a statement released by Kandahar provincial administration said.

"Some anti-government insurgents occupied an under construction building in Kandahar city this morning and begun attacking police department but the police in retaliation have eliminated three attackers," the statement asserted.

It also said that efforts to kill or capture all the attackers and bring the situation under control are continuing by the security forces.

A group of militants raided police departments in 5th precinct of Kandahar city the capital of Kandahar province 450 km south of Afghan capital Kabul with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms.

"Taliban militants attacked the department of police in 5th precinct of Kandahar city at around 10:00 a.m. local time with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms," the official told Xinhua but declined to give his name.

Meantime, police chief of Kandahar province Khan Mohammad Mujahid in talks with Xinhua confirmed that some armed men attacked police training center in Kandahar city and police are trying to control the situation.

On the other hand, locals say that two big explosions have rocked the 5th precinct so far and gun shots are heard.

Afghan and NATO-led forces have cordoned off the area and trying to kill or capture the attackers.

So far six injured policemen have been injured in the gun shots and blasts, a police official said but refused to be identified.

On the other hand, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit claimed of responsibility and in talks with media via telephone from unknown locations said that four suicide bombers targeted police department and killed over two dozen police and foreign soldiers inside the compound, a claim has yet to be confirmed by officials.
