Egypt's court orders to dissolve former ruling party: state TV

04-17-2011 08:02 BJT

CAIRO, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian supreme administrative court ordered on Saturday to dissolve the former ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) and hand its liquidated assets and properties to the government, state media reported.

The decision was based upon achieving the public interest after the NDP prevented other parties from being formed and seized all the state headquarters for its own interest, Court sources added.

The source also said the party can apply for re-establishment once meeting the state's conditions of registration, namely minimum 300 members from each governorate and a program that abides by the constitution.

NDP spokesman Nabil Luka Bibawi was quoted by state news agency MENA as saying that the party will take legal procedures against the ruling on the dissolution of the party, explaining that the corruption of one part does not make the whole corrupt.

The NDP was established in 1978 by late president Anwar el- Sadat. Then Mubarak took the presidency till he was forced to step down on Feb. 11 after nationwide protests hit the country. Many NDP buildings were torched during the 18-day mass anti-regime protests.

Mubarak and a number of other senior members of the NDP, including former general secretary Safwat El-Sherif and Mubarak's younger son Gamal, were under investigation over corruption accusations.

The party changed its name into the New National Party on Monday and named Talaat Sadat, a nephew of the assassinated former president Anwar Sadat, as its head to replace Mubarak.
