China expresses deep concern about escalating situation in Gaza: envoy

UNITED NATIONS, April 21 (Xinhua) -- China is deeply concerned about the escalating situation in the Gaza Strip and hopes the relevant parties effectively observe the cease-fire commitment in order to stabilize the situation and restore calmness as soon as possible, Li Baodong, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations said here Thursday.

Li made the remarks on a Security Council open meeting about the situation in the Middle East. "China hoped the parties concerned to effectively observe a cease-fire commitment made recently, exercise restraint, refrain from unilateral provocation and avoid innocent civilian casualties in order to stabilize the situation and restore calmness as soon as possible," he said.

At present, the peace talks between Palestine and Israel are at a standstill. China is opposed to settlement activities of Israel on the occupied Palestinian territory, which is not conducive to breaking the stalemate nor building the political mutual trust, said Li. "We hoped Israel to exercise restraint and caution, adopt practical measures to create conditions for early resumption of the talks between the two sides," he added.

The ambassador called on the international community to be more united and coordinated in its increase of efforts to promote peace talks and secure the advancement of the peace process.

"We hope the Middle East Quartet play its active role in finding a proper resolution to break the stalemate of the Middle East peace process. At this critical juncture, China supports the Security Council in playing a greater role in resolving the question of the Middle East," he said,

Li noted that peace talks on other tracks such as between Lebanon and Israel, Syria and Israel in the Middle East process should also be promoted in parallel. All parties concerned should try to create conditions from resuming dialogue and negotiations, and bring an end to prolonged confrontation and tension in the region, he said.
