Women's singles world number one Wang stunned by teammate at Asian badminton championships

World number one Wang Shixian of China was ousted by her teammate Lu Lan in the second round of women's singles at the Asian badminton championships here on Thursday.

Lu, world number 28, came from behind to stun Wang 10-21, 21-18, 21-11, bringing the biggest upset in these championships till Thursday.

The 21-year-old Wang had a better start by taking the first game at ease, but the top seed lost her rhythm in the following game, often hitting back the shuttle outside the line or under the net. The unstoppable Lu stormed to take the decisive game by fierce attacking.

"I was a tired, I made too many mistakes on the court," said Wang, who clinched her first title at the All England Open last month. "I am familiar with Lu. Both of us were in the same level though the gap in world rankings, therefore it is normal that she beat me."

Lu, world champion in 2009, set up a possible clash with another teammate Li Xuerui, the sixth seed. "Hopefully I could make another upset in the quarterfinals," said the 24-year-old.

Wang was the third Chinese women shuttler who was out of these championships, as third seed Wang Xin was defeated by qualifier Japanese Mitani Minatsu in the first round and Zhu Lin retired from the competition due to injury.
