NEW DELHI, April 22 (Xinhua) -- India's most respected spiritual leader Satya Sai Baba is "critically ill" and have been put on a life-support system, doctors treating the 86-year-old at a hospital in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh said Friday.

"The response shown to the treatment continues to be minimal by all the vital organs and his heart rate and blood pressure continue to be low and supported by drugs," A.N. Safaya, Director of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences in the state's Puttaparthi town, said in a medical bulletin.

Sai Baba was sent to the hospital on March 28 following problems related to heart and breathing problems.

Meanwhile, authorities have clamped prohibitory orders in Puttaparthi, the spiritual leader's home town, as thousands of his devotees have begun started converging.

"We have imposed the prohibitory orders to maintain law and order situation in the town," said a police official.
