2 militants killed in gunfight in Indian controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR Indian-controlled Kashmir, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Two militants including a commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant outfit were killed by Indian army and Police in a fierce gunfight in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Friday.

The gunfight broke out Thursday in Saranwan area of district Kishtwar, 240 km northeast of Jammu city, the winter capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A specific input was received about movement of a group of LeT militants in Saranwan area of Kishtwar district. Subsequently, a joint operation was launched by Police and Army during the night of April 20.

On Thursday morning, a movement was noticed by the contingents. The militants opened heavy volume of fire, which was appropriately retaliated thereby triggering a gunfight. The militants taking advantage of thick foliage and treacherous terrain tried to break contact and attempted to escape.

However, they were challenged and again engaged in gun battle which continued for more than four hours. In the ensuing gun battle two militants were eliminated whereas two others are believed to have escaped from the site," said Dilbagh Singh, Inspector General of Police, Jammu in a media briefing.

The slain militants were identified as Mohammad Sultan Bhat, a district commander of LeT and Jaan Mohammad, local carders of the outfit. LeT outfit is accused of carrying out the 2008 Mumbai attack that claimed 165 lives.
