Canadian benchmark equity index manages weekly gain

TORONTO, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Canadian stocks rose for a third day on Thursday. The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed up 74.54 points, or 0.54 percent, at 13,972.02. For the week, the benchmark equity index gained 1.25 percent.

Gold stocks on the Toronto Stock Exchange performed well on Thursday. Barrick Gold Corp., the world's largest bullion producer, climbed 1.45 percent. Goldcorp Inc. added 1.18 percent.

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc., the world's largest fertilizer producer, climbed 1.23 percent after Mackie Research Capital Corp. raised its rating on the company.

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. dropped 1.29 percent after Apple said iPhone unit sales more than doubled in the second quarter from a year earlier.

Canada's largest base-metals producer Teck Resources Ltd. advanced 2.18 percent.

The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index closed up 18.75 points, or 0.83 percent, at 2,281.64.

On the economic front, data released by Statistics Canada showed that retail sales in Canada increased 0.4 percent in February, offsetting most of the decline in January. Higher sales were reported in nine of 11 subsectors.

On the currency front, the Canadian dollar weakened slightly against its U.S. counterpart.

One U.S. dollar was buying 0.9527 Canadian dollars at 5 p.m. local time (2200 GMT) on Thursday, compared with one U.S. dollar buying 0.9524 Canadian dollars on Wednesday.
