MANAGUA, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen volunteers from the U.S. Red Cross joined local lifeguards and rescue teams working on Nicaragua's Pacific coast Thursday, local daily "El Nuevo Diario" reported.

Nicaragua's Red Cross spokeswoman Lisseth Obando said that the 13 volunteers are helping Nicaraguan lifeguards at the beaches of Port of Corinto and San Juan del Sur, where thousands of foreign and domestic tourists have arrived for the Easter holidays.

The Beach Plan 2011 program starts Monday and ends Sunday, during which the U.S. volunteers are working together with their Nicaraguan colleagues, Obando said.

The Nicaraguan Red Cross also said that an additional 2,000 volunteers were deployed starting Thursday in all main resorts of the country to cope with Easter tourism. Since Sunday, three people have been killed in drowning accidents in those resorts.
