The embassy uploaded a photo onto the microblog, featuring Huntsman saying his goodbyes to his colleagues, whom Huntsman addressed as saying he was grateful for what has been done for a healthy Sino-US relationship.

Huntsman, a moderate voice in the Republican Party, met with several former political advisors in the US in December to discuss a potential White House run, according to Newsweek magazine.

The Chinese-speaking 50-year-old politician was appointed in 2009 by US President Barack Obama as his top envoy to Beijing.

Huntsman said in a speech earlier this month that he wants the relationship between the two countries to progress further than the already once "unimaginable" heights it has already attained.

Obama nominated Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to be the next US ambassador to China last month, saying that no one was better qualified for the key diplomatic post.

Locke was the first Chinese-American governor in the US. He served as governor of Washington from 1997 to 2005.
