TORONTO, April 28 (Xinhua) -- In a widely published photo, she looked even younger than her 23 years of age. Gazing into the camera with a touch of shyness, she looked both hopeful and curious. Perhaps at that moment she was wondering what the future would hold for her.

For Liu Qian, whatever that future held would never become reality. Hundreds of people bid her farewell at a Toronto funeral home, including her grief-stricken parents on Wednesday. In a crime that shocked and gripped this city, Liu was found dead on April 15, several hours after her long-time boyfriend in Beijing witnessed via a Web camera her struggle with an intruder.

Speaking at the funeral, Liu's father reminisced what a warm, kind and gentle soul his only child was. "So many acquaintances and strangers alike, friends with different skin colors and different professions, all gathered here today because of Liu Qian. Were she still alive, were we not at a place that symbolizes the eternal barrier between the living and dead, how warm would she be feeling," said her father, Liu Jianhui, who had travelled to Toronto from Beijing with Liu's mother to attend to her affairs.

Mamdouh Shoukri, President and Vice-Chancellor of York University, shared the parents'grief. "This terrible tragedy has had a tremendous impact on us all. There simply aren't enough words to fill the void in our hearts," Shoukri said at the funeral.
