GM recalls 154,000 2011 Cruze over steering and transmission problems

05-06-2011 09:20 BJT

CHICAGO, May 5 (Xinhua) -- General Motors has initiated a voluntary recall covering more than 154,000 units of its popular Chevrolet Cruze from North America market, due to steering and transmission issues, according to a Thursday report of Detroit Free Press.

The recall covers only the 2011 model of the Cruze, which posted its best month in April since its launch last year.

The biggest U.S. carmaker will recall about 154,000 Cruze in the United States and Canada in order to inspect for proper installation of the steering shaft. Among recalled vehicles, 120, 000 vehicles with automatic transmissions will also be inspected for another problem, which may result in drivers believing they are in a different gear than is actually engaged.

The company said that not all the cars have been sold and those at dealerships will also be inspected for the two defects.

GM received a report from a customer who experienced a steering problem while driving a Cruze in a parking lot. The complaint led to the company finding at least two similar cases, and GM finally decided to initiate the recall on its own, according to the report.

No injuries have been reported due to the two issues, according to the company.

GM reported on Tuesday a 26.4-percent rise in total sales in April compared to the same period a year ago, largely due to demand for its fuel-efficient Chevrolet compact cars and compact crossovers. The company sold 25,160 Cruze units last month.
